¿Cuántos remakes han ganado el Oscar a la mejor película?

El director Michel Hazanavicius lo niega una y otra vez cada vez que se lo preguntan: The Artist no es un remake de Cantando bajo la lluvia. De hecho, ni siquiera es un homenaje, sólo es que son «historias parecidas». Esta falacia (incomprensible, porque ¿qué tendrá de malo hacer un remake?) la puede desmentir cualquiera que tenga conexión a Internet. Sólo hay que buscar la película, bajársela, verla y sorprenderse.

En fin, me he preguntado, cuántos remakes (declarados o no) han ganado el Oscar a la mejor película y he sido incapaz de saber la respuesta, pero sí que he elaborado una pequeña lista (que probablemente se pueda aumentar).

1. The Artist (2011), un remake «secreto» de Cantando bajo la lluvia (1952)

2 Rebelión a bordo (1935), el primer remake en ganar el Oscar. La película original era una cinta australiana titulada In the wake of the Bounty (1933), que fue la primera que interpretó Errol Flynn.

3 Los diez mandamientos (1956). Cecil B. DeMille se copió a sí mismo del filme que ya dirigió en 1923. El primero era más largo, mudo y mucho más divertido. Aparte de la conocida historia de la huida de Egipto incluye otra que transcurre en la actualidad en la que una madre tiene dos hijos, uno maligno y el otro angelical. Dios, como no podía ser de otro modo, es un ser sin piedad que castiga a la madre por los pecados de sus hijos.

4. Ben-Hur (1959) fue el remake de una cinta con el mismo título de 1925. La versión muda contaba entre su reparto (aunque sin aparecer en créditos) con Gary Cooper, Joan Crawford, Douglas Fairbanks, Clark Gable, Janet Gaynor, Lillian Gish… y muchos otros

5. Gigi (1958) tuvo una primera versión con el mismo título y dirigida por Jacqueline Audry en 1949. Vincente Minelli transformó la historia en un musical para ganar el premio gordo.

6. My fair lady (1964) fue un remake de Pigmalión (1938). Hay que admitir que Audrey Hepburn tiene un millón de veces más glamour que Wendy Hiller, y ya de paso que casi cualquier otra actriz de la historia del cine.

7. Infiltrados (2006) está basada en Juego sucio (2002). Martin Scorsese dirigió este remake y ganó el Oscar a la mejor película con un trabajo que está muy lejos de los mejores que ha dirigido, incluyendo La invención de Hugo, la que curiosamente competía este año 2012 contra The Artist.

The director Michel Hazanavicius denies it everytime he speaks, but anyone with an Internet connection can check it. You only have to look for Singin’ in the rain, download it, watch it and get shocked: The Artist is a perfect copy, no matter what the director says.

Here is a short list of the remakes that won the Oscar to the best motion picture.

1. The Artist (2011) , a direct and uncredited remake of Singin’ in the rain.

2. Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), the first remake to win the Oscar. The original was an Australian movie called In the wake of the Bounty (1933), the first one that Errol Flynn played.

3. The ten commandments (1956). Cecil B. DeMille copied himself from the movie he directed in 1923. First one was longer, silent and much, much funnier. Apart from the story in Egypt it included a modern one with a mother with both children, a devilish one and an angelical guy. God is a merciless being who punish the mother for their children’s sins.

4. Ben-Hur (1959) was a remake of Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925). In the silent movie played uncredited Gary Cooper, Joan Crawford, Douglas Fairbanks, Clark Gable, Janet Gaynor, Lillian Gish… and many more.

5. Gigi (1958) was directed by Jacqueline Audry with the same title back in 1949. Vincente Minelli turned the story into a musical and got the main prize.

6. My fair lady (1964) was a remake of Pygmalion (1938), even when we have to admit that Audrey Hepburn is a zillion times more glamourous than Wendy Hiller.

7. The departed (2006), based on Infernal Affairs (2002). Martin Scorsese made the trick and got the Oscar with a movie that is far below many others the director has filmed, including Hugo, the one who was on the race this year 2012.
